Some Scrub Jays readily come to feeders but I have very few images of them because I prefer to photograph birds in a natural setting. There are several subspecies and the “interior” race found around here is shy and furtive which only adds to my woes when I attempt to photograph them.
Both of these Great Horned Owl images were taken on the Montana farm where I grew up as the birds were resting in the auger cutouts of old granaries built by my grandfather, uncle and father back in the early 1930’s.
This pretty little female kestrel enjoyed a vole breakfast yesterday morning along the causeway to Antelope Island. I’ll spare you most of the gory details but raptor feeding behavior is one of the many behaviors that I find interesting.
Many grebe species are well-known for eating feathers, both as adults and as youngsters. The behavior documented in this series may have been the parent encouraging its chick to have an interest in this new item in its “diet”.
