A Twitchy Marsh Wren Making A Completely Vertical Takeoff

Marsh Wrens are twitchy almost by definition but this little guy had it bad.

This is the closest I’ve come (so far) to catching the moment of impact of a tern diving for fish and it’s pretty darned close.

And I love’em both.

Any photography skills I may have were definitely tested yesterday morning as I attempted to photograph terns coming out of the water with fish.

Weight saving strategies of birds for flight also serve them well whenever they feel the need to simply jump. And most can jump very well.

There’s no other way to put it – this fledgling was nothing short of a glutton

These photos really brought home for me the incredible wing speed of hummingbirds.

Plus some eclipse “stuff” for those not already burned out by all the hoopla.

Perhaps this hummingbird was getting tired of being pushed around by monarch butterflies and took its frustrations out on this little guy.

Sphinx moths are almost as much fun (and at least as challenging) to photograph in flight as hummingbirds.
