Rough-legged Hawk – The (very) Big Yawn

This might have been the most gaping yawn I’ve ever seen in a raptor.

I like both images but for different reasons.

I know next to nothing about Oriental art but does this photo from yesterday morning have any resemblance to traditional Japanese prints?

In bird photography a variety of factors can cause our birds to appear soft when they’re actually sharp or at least sharper than they appear to be.

A common species but the photo interests me on many levels.

Catch lights in the eyes of our subjects are important far beyond their diminutive size but they’re both fickle and elusive.

Midwinter is Barn Owl “season” in northern Utah but it can also be an extremely grim time of year for them.

A common species in both name and occurrence but around here at least ravens are uncommonly difficult to photograph well.
