Amazingly Resilient One-legged Ibis"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Last week I came across this one-legged White-faced Ibis at Farmingtom Bay.\u00a0 Normally, these birds feed by slowly wading through the water and locating their invertebrate prey by tactile probing of the muddy substrate.\u00a0 Their long, recurved and extremely sensitive bill is an ideal tool for this purpose.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-attachment-id=\"9104\" since one-legged birds and their struggles aren&#8217;t particularly\u00a0uncommon.\u00a0 But I was much impressed with the resilience and adaptability of this bird under very trying circumstances.\u00a0 The ibis looked and acted healthy and vigorous and the leg seems to have healed nicely.<\/p>\n<p>That said, I don&#8217;t have\u00a0high expectations for the long-term survival of this bird.\u00a0 While I watched it struggle to feed, what\u00a0kept going through my mind was &#8220;that&#8217;s a whole lot of effort for a small return in food&#8221;.\u00a0 After all, survival is an energy game that can only be won if more energy is gained than is lost in its pursuit.\u00a0\u00a0 And the amount of energy expended\u00a0each time this bird jumped out of the water, flapping it&#8217;s wings\u00a0in the effort and then trying to regain its balance was very high.<\/p>\n<p>I hope I&#8217;m
