I simply can’t resist photographing Burrowing Owls.<\/p>\n

These youngsters often\u00a0have a balance problem when they try to\u00a0perch on the relatively unstable sunflowers, which can be a good opportunity for the photographer to get\u00a0some interesting poses.\u00a0 One of the problems here was that\u00a0the sun was just coming up and the light was very low as you can see\u00a0from my very slow shutter speed.\u00a0 Even though this bird\u00a0fluttered on the perch for quite a while I ended up trashing most of those shots because they just weren’t sharp enough.<\/p>\n

But the other problem just about drove me batty for a while.\u00a0 For some reason my Canon 7D wouldn’t allow me to adjust my exposure (ev).\u00a0 How very frustrating to have this bird giving me such nice poses while I’m thinking the\u00a0entire time\u00a0that I’m over-exposing the shots and can’t do anything about it!<\/p>\n

It turned out that my exposure for these shots was just right (I’ve done no exposure adjustment in post-processing with this image) but it took me (us)\u00a0a half hour to figure out what the problem was\u00a0with my camera.\u00a0 Mia saved the day by downloading the 7D manual to her phone and in the end\u00a0the problem turned out to be that I had inadvertently\u00a0switched on the “lock” button on my\u00a0camera.\u00a0 Sheesh!<\/p>\n

I thought some of you might like to “meet” most of the Burrowing Owl family I’ve been photographing this summer.\u00a0 From left to right #3 and #5 are the\u00a0adult parents and\u00a0the other four are their\u00a0youngsters.\u00a0 There’s at least three (possibly four) other juveniles that didn’t\u00a0participate in the family portrait.<\/p>\n

What a challenge it was to get a good look at\u00a0least one eye in all six birds!\u00a0 For that reason, most of these\u00a0group shots were deleted and I haven’t had an opportunity like this since.<\/p>\n

This adult is from a different burrow\u00a0that is\u00a0much too far away from the road for photography but occasionally we find him (her?) perched near the road while it’s hunting for voles.\u00a0 As you can see by the very bloody beak it has had some recent success.<\/p>\n

All three of these images have been taken in the last several weeks.<\/p>\n
