<\/p>\nSomething a little different from me today. Quite a lot different actually.<\/p>\n

1\/2500, f\/6.3, ISO 800, Canon 7D Mark II, Canon EF 500mm f\/4L IS II USM + EF 1.4 III Extender, not baited, set up or called in<\/em><\/p>\n I don’t post portraits (head shots or partial birds) very often but I was close to this male California Quail two days ago at Farmington, I only had time for a single shot, I clipped his tail and I wasn’t particularly fond of his fence perch anyway.\u00a0A portrait seemed to be the ideal solution since I really like the details of his head and upper body against the dark background.<\/p>\n Here he’s looking down\u00a0at his intended landing spot just before jumping off the fence. His black head\u00a0plume (topknot)\u00a0is more subtle than usual against the dark background and I’ve decided I like that effect. In reality his head was at a steeper downward angle than this but I rotated the image because I like this angle better. Sometimes reality\u00a0is in the eye of the beholder.<\/p>\n This may be one of those images that appeals to me more than to others and I’m fine with that.
