In nature photography sometimes hard work and perseverance\u00a0pay off and sometimes they don’t. This time my results were mixed.<\/p>\n

8:48 AM: Two days ago we found a bull moose sleeping or resting (I suspect the former)\u00a0in the deep, deep shade of a nearby mountain. The light was so poor it was hardly worth taking any photos but you know me and documentary images.\u00a0\u00a0I only had 1\/100 sec shutter speed for this photo taken at an effective 1120mm so I was lucky to get it as sharp as I did.<\/p>\n

9:15 AM:\u00a0Twenty seven\u00a0minutes later the light from the sun coming\u00a0over the mountain\u00a0was still so far away from the moose (dark spot at lower center left) that it seemed futile to wait around any longer.\u00a0The moose was likely to wander into the willows before the sun reached him so at one point\u00a0I drove down the well-lit road to see if I could find any birds.<\/p>\n

But the thought of photos of\u00a0a bull moose during rut kept nagging at me so just a few minutes later\u00a0I returned to see if I might get lucky.<\/p>\n

9:49 AM: So I sat and waited for what seemed like forever. Eventually, an hour and one minute after my first photos of him the sun began to reach him after he stood up and walked just a few feet to the west\u00a0(a runner had come by and it made him get on his feet). But even when the light flooded the area I usually didn’t have a good angle on him so I\u00a0backed a short distance\u00a0up the road to try to improve\u00a0the situation.<\/p>\n

9:59 AM:\u00a0That helped with the angle but now I had vegetation in front of his legs and rump. I took many photos and this is about the best I could manage before he disappeared into the trees.<\/p>\n

So I worked on this guy for most of\u00a0an hour and eleven minutes and still didn’t get any great shots of him. But just seeing a moose is always a special occasion for me and I got some fairly decent photos so that was a bonus.<\/p>\n

But I’ll continue to fantasize about that spectacular shot of a bull moose\u00a0during rut that has always eluded me.<\/p>\n
