Boy, have my tastes ever changed\u00a0over the last few years!<\/p>\n

Aesthetic taste is personal and for\u00a0many\u00a0it can evolve over time. Last night I realized just how much mine has changed, at least when it comes to this image.<\/p>\n

I photographed this Rough-legged Hawk on Antelope Island\u00a0six years ago today, soon after it took off from a boulder. Four clicks after it lifted off it passed in front of these dried sunflowers and then I lost focus on the bird.<\/p>\n

Back then I was pretty anal about not liking any obstructions in front of my subject,\u00a0to the point of absurdity. If there was “stuff” in\u00a0front of my bird I didn’t post it on my blog or I deleted it\u00a0and usually both. In fact that’s exactly why I never posted this photo. I’m really surprised I still have it but last night while\u00a0reviewing other images I’ve taken this time of year to see what species\u00a0might be available now\u00a0I ran across it again.<\/p>\n

And now I like the photo better with the sunflowers in the image than I believe I would without them. I think they add interest and\u00a0context, they give us a better feel for habitat and they don’t significantly obstruct our view of the bird. Throw in the bi-layered background, a flight posture I like and good eye contact and for my tastes today it’s more than just a keeper. I don’t think it’s a great image (partly because it could be a\u00a0tad sharper)\u00a0but it’s a helluva lot better than I used to think it was.<\/p>\n

Just goes to show you, even this\u00a0confirmed creature of habit can\u00a0change a little\u00a0if given the greater part of a decade to do it.<\/p>\n

PS – Ok, now I’m curious. This shouldn’t be just about me – have you personally noticed\u00a0your aesthetic tastes (in any artistic genre)\u00a0changing over time? I’m guessing\u00a0that kind of\u00a0evolution happens much more often with others than it does with me. But maybe not…<\/em><\/p>\n
