This is a pose I seldom post on my blog\u00a0or even like very much\u00a0but somehow it works for me with this young Prairie Falcon.<\/p>\n

This photo was taken several years ago\u00a0on an overcast December morning on\u00a0the Antelope Island causeway. I’ve never posted it because the\u00a0bird is looking mostly\u00a0away from me and typically I prefer better eye contact. But in this case I actually\u00a0enjoy the falcon’s wistful over the shoulder gaze and I do have a catch light in the eye despite the poor light. I also like the background, the perch and the texture of the slightly fluffed feathers as the bird tried to keep warm in the cold.<\/p>\n

I was able to get dozens of nice photos of this falcon that have much better eye contact.\u00a0I only have two with it looking in this direction and I like to pretend I know why it looked away from me\u00a0like this. Seconds before this shot was taken the bird was perched a couple of inches to our right –\u00a0at the very edge of the drop-off with its hind toes hanging over that edge. Young and inexperienced bird that it was…<\/p>\n

it slipped and\u00a0nearly fell off backwards. And I do mean it came very<\/em> close to going over the edge. I like to think it was embarrassed that I’d witnessed its faux pas\u00a0so it\u00a0didn’t want to maintain eye contact with me any longer.<\/p>\n

I know that’s a reach but I’m easily entertained…<\/p>\n
