{"id":50170,"date":"2017-07-23T04:37:29","date_gmt":"2017-07-23T10:37:29","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.featheredphotography.com\/blog\/?p=50170"},"modified":"2017-07-23T05:21:13","modified_gmt":"2017-07-23T11:21:13","slug":"a-rehabbed-burrowing-owl-release-that-meant-a-lot-to-me","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/featheredphotography.com\/blog\/2017\/07\/23\/a-rehabbed-burrowing-owl-release-that-meant-a-lot-to-me\/","title":{"rendered":"A Rehabbed Burrowing Owl Release That Meant A Lot To Me"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It&#8217;s always heartwarming when an injured raptor can be released back into the wild but this one was special.<\/p>\n<p>Last spring this male Burrowing Owl was turned over to the <a href=\"http:\/\/wrcnu.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Wildlife Rehabilitation Center of Northern Utah (WRCNU)<\/a> for rehab after being injured on Antelope Island.\u00a0His wing injury was\u00a0quite severe\u00a0so for some time they thought\u00a0he\u00a0might not be releasable but recently\u00a0his recovery has been so complete it was determined\u00a0he could be returned to the wild.<\/p>\n<p>Our own April Olson (she&#8217;s a good friend and comments here often) is a dedicated\u00a0volunteer for WRCNU and she invited\u00a0Mia and I\u00a0up to the Promontory area of northern Utah yesterday morning to take part in the release. She had been disappointed for us because <a href=\"https:\/\/featheredphotography.com\/blog\/2016\/06\/20\/another-nasty-encounter-between-an-owl-and-a-barbed-wire-fence\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Galileo&#8217;s wing trauma<\/a> (the same injury to the same wing tendon as this owl suffered) prevented him from being released and us being able to witness it. That had always been a disappointment for us too, mostly for Galileo&#8217;s sake of course.<\/p>\n<p>So yesterday morning\u00a0we drove the 90 miles to the chosen spot (not far from where Galileo had been hung up on the barbed wire), met April at the appointed time, and witnessed the release. He flew past some nearby rocks and disappeared into a low area, chattering at us as he went (I like to think it was happy chatter but he was probably just pissed off at us&#8230;). This image should give you some idea of how small these owls really are &#8211; with their wings closed they&#8217;re only about the size of a soda can.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m constantly amazed at the dedication and selflessness of\u00a0rehabbers and April is a perfect example.
