It’s been a good winter in northern Utah\u00a0for Rough-legged Hawks.\u00a0 I’ve\u00a0seen many more this year than I have in years past and they were particularly\u00a0abundant on Antelope Island and on the causeway.\u00a0\u00a0On several occasions out there we counted\u00a020\u00a0birds or more.\u00a0 Their numbers have now thinned out considerably but there’s still a few of them around.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u00a0I found this one a few weeks ago perched in the grasses in front of a darker colored field of dried sunflowers.\u00a0\u00a0The hawk\u00a0was too obscured by the grasses for quality photos so as usual I set up for take-off.<\/p>\n

As the hawk gained elevation the darker sunflowers dominated the background but you can still see the out of focus grasses at the bottom of the\u00a0frame.\u00a0 I really like the backgrounds\/settings the island often provides, though\u00a0all that\u00a0texture and contrast behind the subject can sure make it a challenge to get focus lock on the bird\u00a0– particularly in flight.<\/p>\n

I’ll miss these handsome\u00a0buteos this summer but hope they have a successful breeding season on the arctic tundra and return in good\u00a0numbers again next winter.<\/p>\n
