Pipits have\u00a0an unusually long hallux (back toe and claw) which is thought to aid them in\u00a0walking on snow as they forage. But I never like to ignore the LBJ&#8217;s (&#8220;little brown jobs&#8221;, thank you for that moniker, Elephant&#8217;s Child) when I encounter them.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ll miss these birds (and their soft <a href=\"https:\/\/www.allaboutbirds.org\/guide\/American_Pipit\/sounds\" target=\"_blank\">calls<\/a>)\u00a0when they&#8217;re gone and that won&#8217;t be long now.<\/p>\n<p>Ron<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;ve seen far more American Pipits migrating through northern Utah this fall than I&#8217;ve ever seen before.
