But the same two birds sometimes re-mate in following years and come back to or near their original territory. I never did see a female with this male (sexes are easy to distinguish due to sexual dimorphism) but males arrive on breeding grounds first, several weeks before the female. It&#8217;s somewhat unusual for a pair to reuse a nest cavity from the previous year, however they commonly return to the same nest tree and excavate new cavities.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">If I remember correctly this is not the aspen that contained the nest holes\/cavities but it&#8217;s right next to the tree that did. At least one of the nest cavities was being contested by flickers, bluebirds, swallows and nuthatches and by the time we left the much larger Northern Flicker had apparently successfully claimed the largest of the cavities (which it continued to enlarge) and I didn&#8217;t see the sapsucker come close to the tree again.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">So when it comes right down to it I don&#8217;t know for sure if this is last year&#8217;s bird or not but I like to think it is. After all, old friends aren&#8217;t easy to come by&#8230;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Ron<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><em>Note &#8211; We arrived home from our camping\/photo\u00a0excursion to Montana and Idaho\u00a0yesterday afternoon.
