The tail becomes fanned and erect, the breast distended, yellow eye-combs\u00a0erect and more obvious and\u00a0long filoplume feathers arising from the back of the neck are exposed. Sound production coincides with this expansion and deflation of the air sacs. The nonvocal portion (a &#8220;plopping&#8221; sound called an air sac pop)\u00a0is produced and amplified by the inflated air sacs. The entire sound array can be heard <a href=\"http:\/\/www.allaboutbirds.org\/guide\/Greater_Sage-Grouse\/sounds\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Research shows that though there are typically many grouse of both sexes on the lek most of the females mate with the same one or two males. From BNA Online:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: left;\">&#8220;2 males obtained 74% of 174 copulations in Wyoming (<a class=\"biblio\" href=\"http:\/\/bna.birds.cornell.edu\/bna\/species\/425\/articles\/species\/425\/biblio\/bib240\">Scott 1942<\/a>), 54% of 103 copulations in Saskatchewan and Montana (<a class=\"biblio\" href=\"http:\/\/bna.birds.cornell.edu\/bna\/species\/425\/articles\/species\/425\/biblio\/bib191\">Lumsden 1968<\/a>), 86% of 42 copulations in Wyoming (<a class=\"biblio\" href=\"http:\/\/bna.birds.cornell.edu\/bna\/species\/425\/articles\/species\/425\/biblio\/bib288\">Wiley 1973b<\/a>), and 66% of 533 copulations in Montana (<a class=\"biblio\" href=\"http:\/\/bna.birds.cornell.edu\/bna\/species\/425\/articles\/species\/425\/biblio\/bib143\">Hartzler and Jenni 1988<\/a>). One male copulated 169 times in one season in Montana (<a class=\"biblio\" href=\"http:\/\/bna.birds.cornell.edu\/bna\/species\/425\/articles\/species\/425\/biblio\/bib143\">Hartzler and Jenni 1988<\/a>).
