<\/p>\nDark-eyed Juncos are a common winter feeder species but I prefer to photograph them in as natural a setting as possible.<\/p>\n

\u00a01\/2000, f\/7.1, ISO 500, Canon 7D Mark ll, Canon<\/em> EF500mm f\/4L IS II USM +1.4 tc, shot and processed in JPEG,\u00a0not baited, set up or called in<\/strong><\/p>\n A small flock of these birds has been hanging around a large rabbitbrush bush at Farmington Bay for about ten days now.\u00a0 They forage for seeds near the base of the bush and occasionally allow a close approach.\u00a0 Usually their beaks are covered\u00a0with seed husks and other plant debris (which I really don’t mind) but I caught this one in a rare moment of relative\u00a0tidiness.\u00a0 Here I like the tilt of the head and the eye contact (image taken yesterday).<\/p>\n <\/p>\n <\/p>\n \u00a01\/2000, f\/6.3, ISO 500, Canon 7D, Canon<\/em> EF500mm f\/4L IS II USM +1.4 tc,\u00a0not baited, set up or called in<\/strong><\/p>\n A little over a week ago I photographed this perky male as it perched on top of the same rabbitbrush.\u00a0 I’m not particularly fond of the out of focus flowers in the lower foreground but I\u00a0do like the pose and detail even though part of the bird\u00a0is hidden.<\/p>\n It’s likely to be a long winter (if it ever actually begins) and Dark-eyed Juncos are one of the species that helps me to get through it.<\/p>\n Ron<\/p>\n <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":" Dark-eyed Juncos are a common winter feeder species but I prefer to photograph them in as natural a setting as possible.<\/p>\n![\"dark-eyed](\"https:\/\/featheredphotography.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/dark-eyed-junco-1132-ron-dudley.jpg\")
