style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><strong>1\/2500, f\/8, ISO 500, Canon 7D, Canon EF500mm f\/4L IS II USM, not baited, set up or called in<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">I photographed this American Avocet several days ago at Glover Pond.\u00a0 At first glance its injury may not be obvious but notice that the joint on its right leg bends the wrong way and opposite\u00a0that of the normal\u00a0left leg.\u00a0 That joint (actually the “heel” of a bird’s leg) is apparently either broken or the ligaments are\u00a0torn or severely hyperextended (I’m no vet or rehabber).\u00a0 The bird could put no weight on its right leg and was feeding by hopping on one foot.\u00a0 Other than that it seemed healthy and acted normally.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">In my bird photography activities it’s not unusual for me to encounter injured birds and I often wonder if anything can be done for them\u00a0so this time I decided to call Dalyn Erickson, Wildlife Specialist at the Wildlife Rehabilitation Center of Northern Utah and find out what, if anything, could be done for this avocet or other birds I may find in the future in a similar situation.\u00a0 Her response was pretty much what I expected – if the bird is “flighted” it’s usually impossible and\/or impractical to attempt to capture it.\u00a0 Theoretically it might be captured by firing capture nets at it but doing so carries a serious risk of further injuring or even killing the bird.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The future prospects of this avocet are unclear (at least in my mind)\u00a0but I’ve seen birds with missing feet and\/or legs apparently thrive (see link <a href=\"https:\/\/www.featheredphotography.com\/blog\/2014\/02\/14\/a-survivor-last-years-one-footed-merganser-has-returned\/\" target=\"_blank\">#1<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.featheredphotography.com\/blog\/2012\/11\/13\/an-amazingly-resilient-one-legged-ibis\/\" target=\"_blank\">#2<\/a> if interested)\u00a0and I have hopes that this bird will learn to adapt.\u00a0\u00a0There’s a bull Bison on Antelope Island (we call him “Gimpy”)\u00a0with a severely broken right-rear leg and he’s survived\u00a0with that crippling injury for at least three years\u00a0now.\u00a0 I saw him again a month ago today and he still seems healthy, given his injury.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">When I first\u00a0noticed that bison I thought he’d be dead within days so you never know about this avocet.\u00a0 I do have hopes…<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Ron<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Injured birds are always
