Interesting Poses From A Rufous Hummingbird"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Yesterday morning I spent more time with the hummingbirds on Antelope Island.\u00a0 This female Rufous Hummingbird\u00a0(it may be an immature male but for the sake of convenience I&#8217;ll refer to the bird as &#8220;she&#8221;)\u00a0perched close and gave me\u00a0some interesting poses.\u00a0 I&#8217;m not fond of the\u00a0old sunflower stem perch because it&#8217;s out of focus, parts of it are too bright and there&#8217;s an annoying\u00a0dead leaf hanging down below the hummer but I like the poses and behaviors.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-attachment-id=\"25959\" in\u00a0<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Within a few moments of settling on the perch she stuck out her long tongue and at the same time demonstrated rhynchokinesis, the ability of\u00a0 some birds (cranes, shorebirds, swifts and hummingbirds) to flex their\u00a0bills out of their normal shape.\u00a0\u00a0Here you see that the tips have momentarily separated.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img in\u00a0<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Then she had an itch under her eye and it must have been a doozy because she scratched it repeatedly.\u00a0 Though it\u00a0may look\u00a0like her foot is coming from beneath her wing that&#8217;s not the case.\u00a0 She dropped her wing and brought her leg and foot over the top of the wing-base (shoulder) to reach the itch.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-attachment-id=\"25964\" fluffed plumage.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">This bird had been feeding on some of the\u00a0Rocky Mountain Bee Plants I&#8217;ve reported on in earlier posts.\u00a0 This year those plants are\u00a0extremely\u00a0rare on the island (at least in places where they&#8217;re accessible)\u00a0and yesterday we noticed that someone had ripped out\u00a0and removed\u00a0the largest, showiest and\u00a0most flower-laden plant of them all.\u00a0 I can only guess at their motivation but some of the possibilities are less than flattering&#8230;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Ron<\/p>\n<p
