I’m no authority on the highly variable color variations of the Red-tailed Hawk but I believe this bird to be an intermediate-morph adult.\u00a0 I love these rufous-colored hawks.<\/p>\n

I\u00a0encountered this hawk three days ago on the same morning I photographed the three red-tail chicks <\/a>on the nest that I posted about recently.\u00a0 I’d estimate that this bird was\u00a0roughly three miles from the nest but it isn’t one of the parents of\u00a0those chicks.\u00a0 I\u00a0quite like the setting and background in this image but I missed the take-off shots.\u00a0 I was parked on the side of a\u00a0country road in the west desert\u00a0(shooting from my pickup) and I\u00a0was a little concerned about\u00a0possible oncoming traffic.\u00a0 I looked up for a split-second to check on the progress of a car approaching far-off in the distance and the bird chose that instant to take off.\u00a0 Drats!<\/p>\n

For me this image is almost as much about the juniper and its berries as it is the hawk.\u00a0\u00a0 The Utah Juniper (commonly but mistakenly called “cedar” – think Cedar City, Utah)\u00a0is ubiquitous in plateaus, dry plains and lower mountain elevations of\u00a0several western states, especially Utah.\u00a0 The “berries” as they’re typically called aren’t berries at all but\u00a0female\u00a0cones with unusually fleshy and merged scales.\u00a0 The berries are eaten by jackrabbits, foxes, coyotes and many\u00a0bird species, particularly as a winter food\u00a0source.<\/p>\n
