This woodpecker was a photographic lifer for me.<\/p>\n

I should define how I use the term “lifer”.\u00a0 For most birders a lifer is their first positive ID of\u00a0a species.\u00a0 But I’m not really a birder in the classic sense\u00a0since I don’t keep lists, so\u00a0for me a lifer is the first time I get a photograph of a species that is worth keeping.<\/p>\n

1\/160, f\/5.6, ISO 500, Canon 7D, 500 f\/4, 1.4 tc, natural light,\u00a0not baited, set up or called in<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

I photographed this woodpecker on a camping\/photo trip to the Uinta Mountains in July of 2010.\u00a0 These\u00a0sapsuckers typically feed at sap wells but they also take arthropod prey, especially when feeding young.\u00a0\u00a0 The bird worked\u00a0hard at\u00a0extracting this large, winged insect from within\u00a0the stump and I was able to get several sharp\u00a0photos as it did so but this one shows the insect best.<\/p>\n

This is a fairly large crop but\u00a0considering that fact\u00a0I was still\u00a0pleased with the image quality, especially at only 1\/160 sec\u00a0– a shutter speed almost unheard of for me.<\/p>\n

I awoke this morning to howling winds and another incoming storm and the forecast is\u00a0bleak for photography\u00a0for many days.\u00a0 That thought was a bit (a lot!)\u00a0depressing so I decided to go back into my archives and post a “greener, warmer” image – just for the memories…<\/p>\n
