Paying The Price For An Ethical Stance"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>By definition there is often a price to be paid for ethical nature photography since the image you get may not be the one you envisioned or hoped for.<\/p>\n<p>For several years now I&#8217;ve been photographing a nesting pair of Black-billed Magpies on Antelope Island.\u00a0 They&#8217;ve always nested in the same Greasewood bush within just a few feet of a developed and busy campsite.\u00a0 The very large, domed nest is buried deeply in the low bush which must give them the security they\u00a0require because despite the presence of campers,\u00a0children, dogs and all the requisite hubbub inherent\u00a0to such a situation these birds have\u00a0raised\u00a0youngsters each year.\u00a0\u00a0 On\u00a0spring mornings when the site isn&#8217;t occupied by campers we often park in that campsite and photograph the birds from inside my pickup\u00a0as they go about their normal activities.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/featheredphotography.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/IMG_8649.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-attachment-id=\"22021\" data-permalink=\"https:\/\/featheredphotography.com\/blog\/2014\/02\/11\/black-billed-magpie-paying-the-price-for-an-ethical-stance\/img_8649\/\" data-orig-file=\"https:\/\/featheredphotography.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/IMG_8649.jpg\" data-orig-size=\"900,629\" data-comments-opened=\"1\" data-image-meta=\"{&quot;aperture&quot;:&quot;6.3&quot;,&quot;credit&quot;:&quot;RON DUDLEY&quot;,&quot;camera&quot;:&quot;Canon EOS 7D&quot;,&quot;caption&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;created_timestamp&quot;:&quot;1362470334&quot;,&quot;copyright&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;focal_length&quot;:&quot;500&quot;,&quot;iso&quot;:&quot;500&quot;,&quot;shutter_speed&quot;:&quot;0.0003125&quot;,&quot;title&quot;:&quot;&quot;}\" data-image-title=\"IMG_8649\" data-image-description=\"\" data-image-caption=\"\" data-large-file=\"https:\/\/featheredphotography.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/IMG_8649.jpg\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-22021\" alt=\"IMG_8649\" src=\"https:\/\/featheredphotography.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/IMG_8649.jpg\" width=\"900\" height=\"629\" srcset=\"https:\/\/featheredphotography.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/IMG_8649.jpg 900w, https:\/\/featheredphotography.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/IMG_8649-300x209.jpg 300w, https:\/\/featheredphotography.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/IMG_8649-150x104.jpg 150w, https:\/\/featheredphotography.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/IMG_8649-400x279.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 900px) 100vw, 900px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><strong>1\/3200, f\/6.3, ISO 500, Canon 7D, 500 f\/4, not baited, set up or called in<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Last spring (this image was taken 11 months ago)\u00a0we were constantly frustrated by a group of twigs that had grown almost straight up the previous summer\u00a0on top of the bush for about a foot.\u00a0 The top of\u00a0the nest\u00a0bush was their favorite perch and those twigs at least partially obscured the magpies in\u00a0many of our\u00a0images, whether they be take-off or behavioral shots.\u00a0 Mia and I often joked with each other that next time we visited the island we&#8217;d bring\u00a0my pruning sheers and lop off those darned offending twigs.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">But of course\u00a0that&#8217;s something we&#8217;d never do.\u00a0 Birds choose nest sites for a variety of practical reasons, including seclusion, safety from predators (and unthinking humans) and\u00a0shade from the broiling summer sun.\u00a0 Altering\u00a0nest sites for the sake of a photograph is unconscionable and unethical but sadly it is\u00a0something that is often done.\u00a0 See two examples of such behavior\u00a0from the blog of my friend Rich Ditch &#8211;
