I’m quickly tiring of snow, cold and even the color white but I still love raptors in snowy or frosty settings.<\/p>\n

A few weeks ago I posted a\u00a0shot of this Rough-legged Hawk with a different pose and\u00a0crop but I thought some of the other images deserved some exposure too.\u00a0 Fully realizing that today most\u00a0folks will be more interested in flying prolate spheroids called footballs than they will be in birds that fly I chose Super Bowl Sunday to post these images.<\/p>\n

\u00a0I found\u00a0this hawk in mid-December\u00a0at Farmington Bay as it\u00a0waited\u00a0for the sun to come up on a bitterly cold morning (below zero F).\u00a0 Literally everything was covered with hoar frost, including the bird.<\/p>\n

Typical of birds when it’s very cold, this one was more reluctant to fly than usual so we settled in and watched each other for about 15 minutes.\u00a0 Some of the belly and chest feathers appeared to be frozen stiff so I suspect they were wet when the sun went down the previous evening.\u00a0 I almost froze inside the pickup (engine and heater turned off and two windows down) so I can only imagine how cold this hawk might have been.<\/p>\n

Ok, enough of birds for now.\u00a0 I hope you enjoy the big game (if you’re a fan), the food,\u00a0the camaraderie and the outcome.\u00a0 If not, there’s always next year…<\/p>\n
