{"id":21648,"date":"2014-01-25T05:30:54","date_gmt":"2014-01-25T12:30:54","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.featheredphotography.com\/blog\/?p=21648"},"modified":"2014-01-25T05:30:54","modified_gmt":"2014-01-25T12:30:54","slug":"a-simple-shot-of-a-ferruginous-hawk-in-flight","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/featheredphotography.com\/blog\/2014\/01\/25\/a-simple-shot-of-a-ferruginous-hawk-in-flight\/","title":{"rendered":"A Simple Shot Of A Ferruginous Hawk In Flight"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>By &#8220;simple&#8221; I don&#8217;t mean it was easy to get.\u00a0 It wasn&#8217;t.\u00a0 But there&#8217;s only two elements within the frame &#8211; a hawk in flight and an absolutely\u00a0monotone background and for me that fits\u00a0one definition of a simple image.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/featheredphotography.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/ferruginous-hawk-1398-ron-dudley.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-attachment-id=\"21649\" data-permalink=\"https:\/\/featheredphotography.com\/blog\/2014\/01\/25\/a-simple-shot-of-a-ferruginous-hawk-in-flight\/ferruginous-hawk-1398-ron-dudley-2\/\" data-orig-file=\"https:\/\/featheredphotography.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/ferruginous-hawk-1398-ron-dudley.jpg\" data-orig-size=\"900,678\" data-comments-opened=\"1\" data-image-meta=\"{&quot;aperture&quot;:&quot;7.1&quot;,&quot;credit&quot;:&quot;RON DUDLEY&quot;,&quot;camera&quot;:&quot;Canon EOS 7D&quot;,&quot;caption&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;created_timestamp&quot;:&quot;1289988096&quot;,&quot;copyright&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;focal_length&quot;:&quot;700&quot;,&quot;iso&quot;:&quot;500&quot;,&quot;shutter_speed&quot;:&quot;0.0005&quot;,&quot;title&quot;:&quot;&quot;}\" data-image-title=\"ferruginous hawk 1398 ron dudley\" data-image-description=\"\" data-image-caption=\"\" data-large-file=\"https:\/\/featheredphotography.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/ferruginous-hawk-1398-ron-dudley.jpg\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-21649\" alt=\"ferruginous hawk 1398 ron dudley\" src=\"https:\/\/featheredphotography.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/ferruginous-hawk-1398-ron-dudley.jpg\" width=\"900\" height=\"678\" srcset=\"https:\/\/featheredphotography.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/ferruginous-hawk-1398-ron-dudley.jpg 900w, https:\/\/featheredphotography.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/ferruginous-hawk-1398-ron-dudley-300x226.jpg 300w, https:\/\/featheredphotography.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/ferruginous-hawk-1398-ron-dudley-150x113.jpg 150w, https:\/\/featheredphotography.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/ferruginous-hawk-1398-ron-dudley-400x301.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 900px) 100vw, 900px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><strong>1\/2000, f\/7.1, ISO 500, Canon 7D, 500 f\/4, 1.4 tc, not baited, set up or called in<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">In fact I was so struck by how even the background tones are I did a threshold layer in Photoshop to see if I could see any minor gradations in tone and I couldn&#8217;t.\u00a0 Usually sky backgrounds\u00a0show those gradations, especially when you&#8217;re not aiming your lens straight up (and I wasn&#8217;t here).\u00a0 A little thing but it was something I noticed.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Anyway, back to the hawk.\u00a0 This bird had been &#8220;sit and wait&#8221; hunting on an extremely ugly perch &#8211; a metal weather station in a remote location in\u00a0the west desert\u00a0that uses a small wind turbine to generate power for information transmission.\u00a0 I was slightly surprised that a Ferrug in particular could acclimate to such\u00a0close proximity\u00a0(just a few inches) to the turning propeller but the hawk simply ignored it.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">This bird appears to be in full flight and it is.\u00a0 But it had just taken off and the perch is still\u00a0so close to the hawk (just out of frame to the right)\u00a0that I expected the legs to still be extended from the exertion of take-off.\u00a0 It&#8217;s my guess that if this had been a Red-tailed Hawk\u00a0the legs would still be lowered to some degree rather than tucked up tight.\u00a0 If that&#8217;s the case, perhaps the difference is because the Ferrug is so heavy-bodied (the largest and stockiest of our buteos) that it deliberately tucks the legs and feet early to reduce drag.\u00a0 Pure speculation on my part, of course&#8230;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Ron<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By &#8220;simple&#8221; I don&#8217;t mean it was easy to get.
