Eight days ago I photographed a Northern Harrier as it flew toward me at an angle and then banked away.\u00a0 The following day, because of time constraints and computer issues\u00a0I posted only a single\u00a0shot of the banking maneuver but now I wish I had posted the entire flight sequence of\u00a0four images.\u00a0 With your indulgence for posting the same image\u00a0twice I’ll do just that this morning.<\/p>\n

Here, though the bird is very aware of my presence as it approaches\u00a0it’s still looking down as it hunts below for voles.\u00a0 It’s a little too far away for good image quality and sharpness\u00a0but I wanted to show the change in\u00a0 demeanor as it got closer to me.<\/p>\n

Four frames later\u00a0the harrier is close enough that it temporarily abandoned any thought of hunting and kept its eye on me instead (I’m definitely a suspicious looking guy…).\u00a0 Its left wing is raised in a gentle turn to its right.<\/p>\n

Now the bird is flying almost parallel to me but still getting slightly closer, apparently a little too close for comfort so…<\/p>\n

the bird quickly banked and flew at an angle away from me.<\/p>\n

This banking maneuver is so quick that I was lucky to get it.\u00a0 The photographer’s best chance is to already be shooting a burst when it occurs, which is exactly what happened here.\u00a0 Because of the sudden change in direction and speed you just have to hope that you don’t cut off any body parts.<\/p>\n
