As a bird photographer I\u00a0continually struggle with the tendency\u00a0to ignore the more common species.\u00a0 This is a bad habit I’ve tried to break over the years but my success has been limited so I still too often\u00a0pass on\u00a0opportunities with species like the American Robin, House Finch, American Coot and Mourning Dove.\u00a0 Many fellow photographers have the same tendency and I think we miss some wonderful shots as a result.<\/p>\n

Typically when I see Mourning Doves they’re in an urban\u00a0setting that doesn’t much interest me but I found this bird on Antelope Island in morning light and with a clean, pleasing background.\u00a0 It even gave me some interesting poses on a natural perch that I like so I’m glad I gave this dove a chance as my photographic subject.<\/p>\n

I’m not quite sure why my instinct regarding avian subjects\u00a0seems to equate “common” with “less desirable”.\u00a0 Some of the more mundane\u00a0birds are just as interesting and visually appealing as the less common or even rare species.<\/p>\n

I’m also struck by the irony of my elitist attitude toward common species.\u00a0 If Mourning Doves (for example) were uncommon in my area I’d jump at the chance to photograph them.\u00a0 A\u00a0bird photographer friend who\u00a0 lives in northern Alberta where Mourning Doves are\u00a0seldom found\u00a0once said about this image: “I see this species 2 or 3 times a season, usually at the top of an 80 ft high spruce…\u00a0 I<\/em>\u00a0would be all over this subject!”<\/em><\/p>\n

Over the years I’ve made some strides in my efforts to treat common species more equitably but I still have a ways to go.\u00a0 Perhaps\u00a0one day I’ll have the same\u00a0enthusiasm for\u00a0European Starlings and House Sparrows as my subjects\u00a0as I do for Harlan’s Hawks or Mountain Plovers.<\/p>\n

But I’m not there yet…<\/p>\n
