Last night a local birder reported a Black-chinned Hummingbird in his back yard here in the Salt Lake Valley and I\u00a0was quite surprised to hear about it.\u00a0 I haven’t seen a hummingbird for several weeks and I thought that by now, with our significantly colder weather of late, they’d have all moved on for warmer climes.\u00a0 That particular bird must be a hardy one.\u00a0 Or lost…<\/p>\n

But the news reminded me that before the snow flies I planned on posting a few more images of the hummers I photographed on Antelope Island several weeks ago.\u00a0 There were two or three species of them feeding on the nectar of\u00a0Rocky Mountain Bee Plant\u00a0and since I struggle with\u00a0the ID of hummingbirds (females and juveniles, especially)\u00a0I’ve decided to avoid the likely error of misidentification and simply call these birds “hummers” or hummingbirds.<\/p>\n

Photographing hummingbirds in a wild setting (rather than the more commonly used “set-up” situation) can be tricky.\u00a0\u00a0Occasionally I’d get a bird isolated with an individual flower cluster against a clean background where both bird and flower were sharp but…<\/p>\n

\u00a0more often there were many flowers in the frame with some of them sharp and others out of focus in the background.<\/p>\n

They squabbled over a couple of the most desirable perches near the flowers – this is one of them.<\/p>\n

This particular clump of twigs was troublesome for the photographer because there were so many of them (twigs)\u00a0that the bird perching there was often partially obscured.\u00a0 Several days later I noticed that someone had obviously cut all but one of\u00a0them down, leaving behind a single, clean perch.\u00a0 I was disappointed because by definition it was now a “set-up” and I don’t do set-ups.\u00a0 Just my choice…<\/p>\n

\u00a0This was the other “favorite perch” that was reasonably close to my lens.\u00a0 This bird gave me a series of wing and tail stretching poses that I thought were interesting.<\/p>\n

Despite the fact that\u00a0the bird is looking slightly\u00a0away from me, this shot is one of my favorites.\u00a0\u00a0To my eye there’s a lot of depth to the image and it looks quite 3 dimensional.<\/p>\n

I’m sure I won’t see another hummingbird until late next spring so for me it was fun to re-visit these tiny, colorful and aggressive little buzz-bombs one last time.<\/p>\n
