1\/800, f\/5.6, ISO 800, 500 f\/4, 1.4 tc, natural (and very low)\u00a0light<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\nHere the female on the left has just landed on the nest to relieve the male.\u00a0 Within seconds of her landing the male would take off.\u00a0 That presented a\u00a0problem – how does the\u00a0female avoid getting whapped on the head by his very long\u00a0wings when he launches?\u00a0 The solution – she ducks down and within a second or two he’s gone.<\/p>\n
In this image the right wing of the male is whistling\u00a0over the cowering head of the female.<\/p>\n
Which\u00a0begs the question – what instigates what?\u00a0 Does the male wait until she ducks to take off?\u00a0 Or does the female simply anticipate his take-off and he is oblivious to her vulnerability and posture?\u00a0 Perhaps a combination?<\/p>\n
I don’t have a lot of experience with Osprey and I’m sure that many of you have noticed this behavior before so it’s probably old hat to you.<\/p>\n
But it wasn’t to me and I thought it might be of interest to some of my readers.<\/p>\n

This past May while photographing a pair of nesting Osprey at Flaming Gorge I observed a behavior that was new to me. It’s a little thing but when added up these little things all help to fill in the big picture – a better understanding of the species.<\/p>\n
