Early yesterday morning,\u00a0before leaving to look for birds on Antelope Island,\u00a0I saw a Facebook post by my friend, bird aficionado and artist extraordinaire Bryce Robinson.\u00a0 It was a simple post, saying\u00a0 “I felt a change in the air today. The Roughies are coming…” and it was illustrated with one of his fine drawings – a portrait of a Rough-legged Hawk.\u00a0 The\u00a0“change in the\u00a0air” that Bryce\u00a0referred to\u00a0was our first nippy cold morning after a long, hot summer and such changes always bring thoughts to mind of the return of the Rough-legged Hawk.<\/p>\n

Then I spent the morning on the island looking\u00a0in\u00a0vain for birds (it’s very slow out there\u00a0right now) so as I drove around my mind wandered regularly\u00a0to thoughts of Roughies – inspired by Bryce’s post and the chilly\u00a0temps (51 degrees on the causeway which was 30 degrees colder than some mornings this summer).<\/p>\n

Rough-legged Hawks are just now leaving their high-arctic summer home and heading our way.\u00a0 It’s been a long time and I’ve missed them.\u00a0 It’ll take them a few weeks to get here and you can bet that in my anticipation I’ll be watching for them way too early, but that’s part of the fun.<\/p>\n

We should have good numbers of them by early\u00a0November (it’s a\u00a0very long flight)\u00a0– just about the time of year\u00a0this image was taken two years ago.\u00a0\u00a0 This bird was hunting\u00a0for voles along the Antelope Island Causeway.<\/p>\n

Note: Some may remember my fairly recent post about a banded Prairie Falcon <\/a>in Montana\u00a0that I was able to trace back\u00a0to when it was banded as a fledgling in California (including photos of the bird\u00a0at both locations).\u00a0 Bryce had a\u00a0very similar experience with\u00a0a banded\u00a0immature Swainson’s\u00a0Hawk earlier this month.\u00a0 He’s posted about it here<\/a> for those who may be interested.\u00a0 I think it’s worth a visit, partly for the developing\u00a0discussion about banding in the comments.\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n
