We arrived home a few hours ago from yet another camping\/photo trip to western Montana.\u00a0 I have yet to get the\u00a0 camping trailer unpacked, download thousands of images (this one happened to be on the card in my camera) and a plethora of other chores that are\u00a0nagging at\u00a0me after spending five days away from home.\u00a0 And as usual I’m pretty wiped out after the drive home but I thought I’d do a quick post on a pleasant surprise we had this morning.<\/p>\n

Typically I don’t have high hopes of getting any decent shots during the almost 30 mile drive on a dirt\/gravel road from our usual camping spot to the first paved road.\u00a0 Imagine if you can the noise, the dust and the bird-scattering spectacle of my pickup and camping trailer rattling down the rocky road – a situation not conducive to getting anywhere near spooky birds.<\/p>\n

\"red-tailed<\/a><\/p>\n

1\/1250, f\/5.6, ISO 640, 500 f\/4, 1.4 tc, natural light, not baited, set up or called in<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

But this juvenile Red-tailed Hawk decided to give us a going-away present and it stuck to its post-perch in the very warm light soon after sunrise this morning.\u00a0 As you can see by its posture it was wary of all the dust and noise but it stuck around after the dust settled for some much appreciated photos.<\/p>\n

Most of the adult\u00a0Red-tails are molting right now and not looking their best but\u00a0I though this hatch-year bird was\u00a0quite handsome.\u00a0 I love the warm\u00a0light\u00a0and the\u00a0back-side plumage\u00a0colors and patterns.<\/p>\n

I’ll be posting more images\u00a0from the trip in the coming weeks.\u00a0 But for\u00a0now I’ve got to get back to my chores…<\/p>\n
