Fawns"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>On\u00a0our last trip to southwest Montana in mid-June ago\u00a0we\u00a0encountered a doe pronghorn and her twin fawns.\u00a0 This is cold, high country and fawning season had just begun\u00a0so other than these two we saw very few fawns, even though pronghorn numbers were high.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ll try to avoid the word &#8220;cute&#8221; throughout this post but just out of frame to the\u00a0left for this shot.\u00a0 I&#8217;ve found\u00a0it to be difficult to get catch lights in the eyes of pronghorn despite the fact that their\u00a0bulging eyes are huge.\u00a0 Here I\u00a0got light in the eye of one fawn but&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a to take comfort in each others company and usually cavorted together.\u00a0 There was sagebrush between us so I got few shots of them that were unobstructed where both\u00a0fawns were including this image for two reasons &#8211; so you can see the &#8220;family unit&#8221; and to point out the raised rump hairs of the fawn on the left.<\/p>\n<p>When alarmed Pronghorn erect their long, white rump hairs as a warning signal which makes the rump appear brighter and almost double in size.\u00a0 Adults\u00a0often give off an alarm scent at the same time which has been described as smelling like buttered popcorn.\u00a0 This &#8220;butt shot&#8221; of\u00a0 the fawns shows a good comparison of the raised rump hairs of the fawn on the left as compared to the &#8220;normal&#8221; rump patch of the other fawn.<\/p>\n<p>Mia always giggles with absolute delight when she sees baby pronghorn and this day was no exception.\u00a0 And yes, she called them
