From the moment this flashy male Mountain Bluebird landed on\u00a0a weathered and sun-bleached\u00a0Montana fencepost\u00a0he seemed hyped-up and twitchy.<\/p>\n

He looked me over carefully to make sure I was trustworthy…<\/p>\n

and then began a performance I’d never before witnessed.\u00a0 He’d raise his wings and then…<\/p>\n

drop them.<\/p>\n

Several times he came completely off the perch.<\/p>\n

At times he looked like he was performing a dosey doe.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

He ended with a flourish by spreading his tail.<\/p>\n

I’m unsure of what prompted this display.\u00a0 There was a bit of a breeze but I don’t believe it was enough to destabilize him on the perch.\u00a0 His mate was in the vicinity and perhaps he was displaying for her or maybe it was some kind of territorial visual cue for other bluebirds.\u00a0 I simply don’t know.<\/p>\n

But if he was really dancing I didn’t hear the music…<\/p>\n
