The Ferruginous Hawk has been called “the largest, most powerful, and grandest of our buteos, a truly regal bird” – \u00a0an assessment I fully agree with.\u00a0 The well deserved\u00a0scientific name of this\u00a0splendid hawk\u00a0is Buteo regalis<\/em>.<\/p>\n

1\/2000, f\/7.1, ISO 500, 500 f\/4, 1.4 tc, not baited, set up or called in<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

But I sure do\u00a0find them to be elusive and skittish (fitting for royalty, I guess…)\u00a0and I have very few images of them that I like, especially in full flight.\u00a0\u00a0 This shot was taken in Utah’s west desert, near the base of the Stansbury Mountains.<\/p>\n

I’ve made many long trips to the west desert and mountains with this species as my primary\u00a0photographic quarry, only to return empty-handed.\u00a0 Hopefully my track record\u00a0 will soon improve.<\/p>\n
