Sparrow – Natural vs Unnatural Perches"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>When it comes to sparrows the Lark Sparrow with its distinctive and\u00a0striking head pattern and long towhee-like tail is a particular favorite of mine.\u00a0 This is another species that often prefers disturbed habitats (I recently posted on the <a href=\"http:\/\/featheredphotography.com\/blog\/2013\/04\/11\/mountain-plovers-on-antelope-island-yes-here-in-utah\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Mountain Plover<\/strong><\/a>) such as sites with exposed soils, \u00a0fallow fields, grazing or recent fires, which may explain its decline in the eastern states as those lands that were cleared for agriculture during the mid-1800s are progressively taken over by urbanization or returned to forests.<\/p>\n<p> <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/featheredphotography.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/lark-sparrow-2606-ron-dudley.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-attachment-id=\"15799\" comes to\u00a0nature photography they prefer that no sign of the “hand of man” be apparent in the image.\u00a0 To others the perch doesn’t matter much as long as the bird (subject)\u00a0is presented in an appealing manner.<\/p>\n<p>These two images, both taken in the last few weeks, differ mostly in the perch (and the ruffled feathers in the first shot).\u00a0 Pose, angle of the bird, clean backgrounds and\u00a0light angle\u00a0are very similar but this rusty barbed wire is decidedly unnatural.\u00a0 The image was taken\u00a0near the base of the Stansbury Mountains in Utah’s west desert.<\/p>\n<p> <\/p>\n<p> <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/featheredphotography.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/lark-sparrow-1378-ron-dudley.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"text-align: center;\">\u00a0<em><strong>\u00a01\/4000, f\/5.6, ISO 640, 500 f\/4, 1.4 tc, natural light<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>This sparrow was hopping around on a large boulder on Antelope Island – thus a “natural” perch.<\/p>\n<p>I guess I’m somewhere in the middle when\u00a0it comes to perches\u00a0as I like\u00a0many rustic, man-made perches and settings\u00a0such as\u00a0rusty barbed wire and old weathered fence posts and barns (growing up on a farm probably has something to do with that).\u00a0 That said, I do generally prefer a natural perch.<\/p>\n<p>Preparing this text
