The Green-tailed Towhee is one of the least well-known of all North American birds.\u00a0 As a result of its secretive nature and its tendency to spend most of its time on the ground in shrubby habitat we know very little of its life history or ecology.\u00a0 Most of our knowledge of its natural history comes from anecdotal observations and even those are extremely limited.\u00a0 There are major gaps in our knowledge of the Green-tailed Towhee.<\/p>\n

They have been\u00a0one of my nemesis birds for years.\u00a0\u00a0Back in 1969\u00a0the Green-tailed Towhee was my field project study species when I took the\u00a0college ornithology class that\u00a0began my almost life-long interest in birds\u00a0so I’ve been trying to get decent photos of them ever since I took up bird photography.\u00a0 And I have failed miserably, largely due\u00a0to their aforementioned secretive nature.<\/p>\n

But they do spend some\u00a0time calling on higher perches during breeding season and\u00a0three days ago I was able to catch this one calling and displaying on top of a juniper in the Stansbury Mountains.\u00a0 I like the good look at the namesake green tail\u00a0with the erected red cap.<\/p>\n

This is an image that I would normally never post – the crop is too large for great detail and the angle on the bird is steep.\u00a0 But I was so happy to finally<\/em> get a few acceptable shots of the species that I had to share my excitement.<\/p>\n
