{"id":14425,"date":"2013-04-17T06:11:34","date_gmt":"2013-04-17T12:11:34","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/featheredphotography.com\/blog\/?p=14425"},"modified":"2013-04-17T06:11:34","modified_gmt":"2013-04-17T12:11:34","slug":"a-few-mammals-for-a-change","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/featheredphotography.com\/blog\/2013\/04\/17\/a-few-mammals-for-a-change\/","title":{"rendered":"A Few Mammals For A Change"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;m primarily a bird photographer but when I&#8217;m in the field I do see other types of wildlife and I&#8217;m not hesitant to photograph them in the least.\u00a0 In fact my earliest interest in nature was in mammals, sparked by a\u00a0mammology \u00a0class I took from the legendary Dr. Steven Durrant\u00a0at the University of Utah many years ago.\u00a0 Soon after that I\u00a0enrolled in an ornithology class\u00a0taught by\u00a0Dr.\u00a0William H. Behle (another legend in his field)\u00a0and I was hooked on\u00a0vertebrate biology\/ecology for life.<\/p>\n<p>So for this morning&#8217;s post I thought I&#8217;d concentrate on mammals.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/featheredphotography.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/pronghorn-7400-ron-dudley.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"text-align: center;\">\u00a0<em><strong>1\/1600, f\/6.3, ISO 400, 500\u00a0f\/4, 1.4 tc<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>This Pronghorn buck at Flaming Gorge had a huge harem that he was having a very difficult time keeping under control.\u00a0 One female in particular kept trying to break out from the herd and run off and he would have to repeatedly chase her down and bring her back.\u00a0 In this shot, taken just before sunset, both animals are running very fast.\u00a0 The doe has just given up her escape attempt and is turning to her right to get back to the herd.\u00a0 She&#8217;s half-buried in a small ravine and partially obscured.\u00a0 I liked the action, the warm light and the dark clouds in the background although I do wish we could see more of the doe.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/featheredphotography.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/white-tailed-deer-1794-ron-dudley.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" barley fields on our Montana family farm.\u00a0 When I was growing up on the farm it was\u00a0fairly unusual to see deer there but these days it&#8217;s a much more common event.\u00a0 It&#8217;s my guess that it&#8217;s because there&#8217;s now less illegal poaching than there used to be and perhaps the farmers have become more tolerant of having them on their land.\u00a0 I know we always enjoy seeing them there &#8211; they don&#8217;t eat much (compared to what&#8217;s available) and seem to do very little damage.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">For me this shot has sentimental\u00a0value and probably appeals to me more than it\u00a0does to others.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a Utah.\u00a0 She had very obviously had an unpleasant encounter with a porcupine as she had more than\u00a0a dozen quills embedded in her snout.\u00a0 She seemed to be feeding normally at the time.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/featheredphotography.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/white-tailed-deer-4324-ron-dudley.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" Perhaps it&#8217;s just my sophomoric sense of humor but this shot always makes me smile and I&#8217;ve wanted to post it for some time.\u00a0 I was very close to this sleepy coyote and when it decided to relieve itself it yawned enthusiastically as it did so, which seems to me to be a very human combination.<\/p>\n<p>Who among us has never yawned on the &#8220;throne&#8221; in the
