I’m always happy when I can get decent images of\u00a0an owl in flight.\u00a0 If they’re carrying prey it’s a\u00a0bonus.\u00a0 And if the bird is flying toward me\u00a0I\u00a0often\u00a0consider it icing on the cake – partly because those kinds of shots are so very often baited, decoyed, set up or called in.\u00a0 As always for me, these were not.<\/p>\n

I’ve posted one of these shots before but I hoped it might be interesting for some to see a\u00a0sequence of images as this adult male Short-eared Owl flew toward me with a vole for its mate\u00a0before veering off to my right.<\/p>\n

This first image shows less detail and image quality\u00a0because the owl was further away as it began to approach me but I decided to include it for context in the sequence.\u00a0 The lower background is sagebrush flats while the upper blues are Montana’s Centennial Mountains in shade.<\/p>\n

Four frames later the owl was significantly closer and flew almost directly at me before veering off – a pattern it followed more than once.\u00a0 I’d guess that it was his way of checking me out for any potential threat before delivering the vole.<\/p>\n

And then he started to veer off toward the nest.\u00a0 This is the image that I’d posted before but that\u00a0was long ago\u00a0when I was posting smaller 720 pixel images, so I reprocessed this shot and I\u00a0think it looks significantly better at this larger size.<\/p>\n
