One of my favorite subjects is the male Northern Harrier.\u00a0This species\u00a0is strongly sexually dimorphic, both in color and in size.\u00a0\u00a0 Adult males are mostly white below and gray above with black wing-tips.\u00a0 Adult females are buffy with streaks of brown below and brown above.\u00a0 Females are larger and almost 50% heavier than males.\u00a0 Because juveniles of both sexes are similar to the adult female, to the untrained eye most harriers look like females which is one of the reasons that many\u00a0folks believe that they rarely see males –\u00a0thus the name “Gray Ghost” for the\u00a0“elusive” adult male.<\/p>\n

\u00a0Even though this bird is slightly past me I think the look back at me compensates for that and\u00a0I like the topside view of the wings and tail.<\/p>\n

When I’m lucky enough to have one of these\u00a0harriers take off in my direction they often\u00a0give me\u00a0an\u00a0almost defiant or challenging look, probably enhanced by those bright lemon-yellow eyes.<\/p>\n

I’ve always had a “thing” for harriers, either sex and any age.\u00a0 But I’ll admit to having a particular fondness for photographing the adult males.<\/p>\n
