days ago\u00a0I finally got close enough to photograph a singing Western Meadowlark &#8211;\u00a0my first of the year.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a other because their legs are always longer than I think they are when they&#8217;re buried in the perch like this and I typically don&#8217;t leave enough room for at least one of\u00a0them.\u00a0 spirits, as it always does.\u00a0 They&#8217;re just so enthusiastic about it and when you&#8217;re close the sound can go right through you &#8211; in a good way.\u00a0 I&#8217;m always impressed by the size of their mouth which seems to be exaggerated some by that long beak.<\/p>\n<p>I suspect there are a few of my regular readers who are unfamiliar with the call of this songster (Elephant&#8217;s Child in Australia, for example) so I&#8217;ve provided a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.allaboutbirds.org\/guide\/western_meadowlark\/sounds\" target=\"_blank\"><em>link<\/em><\/a> to their\u00a0song if you&#8217;d like to hear it\u00a0(scroll down about half-way).<\/p>\n<p>These birds (and their song) always make me think of my childhood on the Montana family farm.\u00a0 So many
