Coyotes On Antelope Island"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;m of the <em>strong<\/em> opinion that baiting wild animals of any kind\u00a0for photographic purposes (or most any other purpose, with\u00a0very few exceptions)\u00a0is a despicable practice.\u00a0 It often puts the critter at risk in a variety of\u00a0different ways and no photo is worth that.\u00a0 I&#8217;ve railed against baiting before on this blog so I won&#8217;t go into all the details once again here.\u00a0 But this morning I saw another example of why I despise this practice so much.<\/p>\n<p>The weather has been dreary and overcast for so long that\u00a0I haven&#8217;t been\u00a0out photographing for a while, but this morning we decided to head for Antelope Island just to get &#8220;out there&#8221; and ease small curve on the island we\u00a0noticed this coyote in the middle of the road.\u00a0\u00a0I could hardly believe\u00a0it when I saw that it was feeding on dog food that someone had obviously spread down the center of the road in an\u00a0attempt to lure coyotes up close and\u00a0into an area where\u00a0they wouldn&#8217;t be obscured by vegetation.\u00a0 And it worked!<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-attachment-id=\"10448\" were, the coyote was intent on eating all of the dog food before it left the area.\u00a0 After taking a few documentary photos I drove up to the spot and then we picked up the kibbels and threw them away from the road (we probably should have taken them with us but I didn&#8217;t think of it at the time).\u00a0 We then reported what we saw to a ranger\u00a0and showed him a\u00a0few of\u00a0these images and some of the dog food.\u00a0 He said that they will be keeping an eye out for this\u00a0kind of behavior from visitors to the\u00a0island in the future.\u00a0 I hope\u00a0they catch whoever&#8217;s responsible and throw the book at them.<\/p>\n<p>The potential negative effects of baiting animals close to the road is obvious.\u00a0 Dog food would\u00a0likely\u00a0attract a variety of animals and birds to the road, including coyotes, badgers, bobcats, magpies and who knows what else.\u00a0 Roadkill waiting to happen.\u00a0 And besides, feeding wildlife is very seldom a wise practice.\u00a0 There are very good reasons why it is nearly always discouraged and often illegal.<\/p>\n<p>Ron<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;m of the strong opinion
