When songbirds launch themselves into the air with their wings closed they can appear to be defying gravity.<\/p>\n

A quickly prepared post today. Once again I’m under the gun, this time because my new carpet is scheduled to be installed today. Originally it was scheduled for November 4 but they called at the last minute and asked if they could move it way up, giving me only a day and a half to move out all my furniture and get everything else done in time. To complicate matters, our forecast calls for 2″ (or more) of rain over the next three days and I still have a lot to do before the installers get here in a few hours.<\/em><\/p>\n

So, two quick photos of a White-crowned Sparrow to the rescue.<\/em><\/p>\n

Three days ago, while I was trying to photograph the mated pair of Red-tailed Hawks I posted about yesterday, I also spent some time with White-crowned Sparrows in the same area. Most of\u00a0 them were immature birds like this one, although there were a few adults sprinkled in.<\/p>\n

For this bird I had oodles of shutter speed for takeoff shots so I gave myself extra room on the left side of the frame and rolled the dice.<\/p>\n

I got lucky and kept ‘him’ in frame but instead of flying to his next perch he mostly jumped. Either that or he just waited longer than usual to open his wings, I don’t remember which. .<\/p>\n

I still like the shot, in part because there’s no potential perches to be seen in front of him and the position of his feet makes it look like he’s running through the air. He’s sharp and we can see his face and eye, including catch light.<\/p>\n

Common sparrows, ya gotta love’m.<\/p>\n
