Dark Morph Ferruginous Hawk Takeoff And Flight Series

The dark color morph of the Ferruginous Hawk is unusual, significantly less than 10% of the population in North America. Since Ferruginous Hawks of any color are uncommon (Sibley calls them “rare”), the dark morph is a very narrow slice of that uncommon group and Ferruginous Hawks in general are such regal and impressive hawks I’ve been enamored of this bird ever since I found “him” a couple of weeks ago.

Red-tailed Hawk Perched, Taking Off And In Flight

Raptors have several behavioral quirks that bird photographers who lust after takeoff and flight shots should be very familiar with because they signal imminent takeoff. Yesterday morning near Farmington Bay WMA this immature Red-tailed Hawk knew all the choreographed moves and performed most of them on cue.

American White Pelican Takeoff

American White Pelicans are a species I should train my lens on more often. While they’re sitting on the water they often don’t make a very interesting subject but getting that huge 16 lb. body airborne is a real struggle so photos of them taking off have much more interest for many of us.

American Avocet Takeoff Series

Getting three takeoff shots in a series like this is pretty unusual for me, especially since I didn’t clip any body parts. Yesterday was mostly a good day at Bear River MBR but I saw some very disturbing conditions while I was there.
