Sometimes only subtle differences separate an unremarkable photo from one that makes me take a second look and appreciate it far more. For me this one did just that.
There are very few bird photographers who don’t bellyache about the elusiveness of Belted Kingfishers and I’ve done more than my share of whining about it myself.
Recently I’ve seen several “roughies” at a distance but they were only tiny specks in my viewfinder or flying away from me. Finally, yesterday morning this adult male took pity on me.
This was another instance where I didn’t know what I’d photographed until I reviewed my images at home. That happens often with hummingbirds because they’re so incredibly fast.
