The more I study this photo the more I get out of it. I’ve tried to interpret what I’m seeing as accurately as I can but I may or may not have it right.
Except for a seemingly small but very aggravating detail this second photo might have been among my favorite songbird shots of all time, largely because of degree of difficulty and four unlikely strokes of good luck.
In the western US common mullein is often referred to as “cowboy toilet paper” but chickadees use it for food. These two youngsters may have been siblings but that doesn’t mean they had to be friendly over their breakfast.
For some reason I seldom see and rarely photograph juvenile American Goldfinches. Until recently I didn’t realize how striking and distinctive their wing patterns and colors are and how different they are from the adults.
This is one of two young siblings “walking the pipe” as it tries to develop its coordination. A year ago I posted photos of one of them doing this but all 9 of these images are new to my blog.
