Occasionally I see Short-eared Owls hunting from the ground but it’s nearly always from a distance. This guy didn’t care that I was close. Very close, especially for a SEOW.
I know, I know – two Short-eared Owl posts in a row. But in my view if I’m going to double up on a species there isn’t a better candidate than Shorties.
I’ve seen individual “shorty” chicks a few times in the past but I believe this was the one and only time I’ve photographed two recently fledged siblings together.
Many species just don’t look good in very low light but I think Short-eared Owls can be an exception, probably because their contrasting markings make them stand out so well.
