After twelve years of photographing birds and paying particular attention to their behaviors it isn’t every day that I witness a ritualized aggressive behavior that’s new to me. But it happened yesterday at Bear River MBR with a couple of Great Blue Herons, seemingly on steroids.
A large group of hungry and cooperative Snowy Egrets saved my morning yesterday at Farmington Bay WMA.
The incredibly athletic twisting dives of Northern Harriers on prey are always impressive to witness (and difficult to photograph well) but when it’s an adult male, a “Gray Ghost”, for me at least it’s extra special.
In my view Rough-legged Hawks are spectacularly handsome raptors whether perched or in flight, even in poor light.
It’s been two years since I’ve posted images of this species but yesterday morning at Farmington Bay WMA I had some luck with them (yes, the gate at Farmington is now open).
This black-capped rascal was one of the most exasperating birds I ever aimed my lens at.
Plus some of the challenges I’m facing right now that affect my blogging and may do so in the future.
There are more very similar colors in these photos than you can shake the proverbial stick at.
Largely because of all I learned from him this may be my favorite individual bird I’ve ever photographed.
