Rough-legged Hawk With A Peculiar Hunting Technique

I’ve spent many hours watching Rough-legged Hawks hunt.  Nearly always they hunt from the air or from elevated perches but several years ago this bird showed me a technique I had never seen before and haven’t since. All of these images are presented in the order they were taken. Techs for these shots were: 1/2000 – 1/3200, f/8. ISO 400, 500 f/4, 1.4 tc, natural light, not baited, set up or called in   I found the hawk on the ground and as I approached it in my pickup it didn’t fly off as I expected it would.  Here it’s looking at me but most of the time it was scanning the grasses in the vicinity – obviously hunting for voles from the ground.     It would lift off but only fly a few feet before it landed again.     In this first lift-off it had vegetation in its talons.  I’ve seen them do this before – it’s almost like they’re reluctant to let go of the plant material after they’ve missed the prey.     The hawk landed again…     And intensely scanned the surrounding area for prey.     Then another take-off…     and it flew within inches of the ground…     before it pounced on a vole and swallowed it.     Then it continued to hunt in the same manner.       Another take-off…     and another.  There’s blood on the right foot from the last vole.     The hawk repeatedly did the same thing – take…

Flaming Gorge Osprey

The Osprey is a species that I’ve only had a handful of opportunities with but last spring I found a cooperative nesting pair at Flaming Gorge. In my mind this is a true miracle species because it has arisen Phoenix-like from the ashes of its own demise.  During the 1950s-1970s their populations crashed dramatically, largely due to the effects of DDT and other persistent pesticides in the environment which caused severe eggshell-thinning and poor hatching success.  But when those chemicals were banned the Osprey made a miraculous comeback and today their numbers are approaching historical highs. Anticipating An American Avocet Behavior

Anticipating behaviors is often crucial for nature photographers and that’s particularly true when your subject is a lightning-fast bird.  Most of us don’t need any more images where the wings have been cut off in the frame or the bird is soft due to lack of shutter speed or poor focus tracking of the bird at take-off. The American Avocet in breeding plumage is an especially lovely subject with its long recurved bill, bluish legs, cinnamon head and neck and the black and white chevron pattern on its back.  But you don’t see many quality flight or take-off images of the species, partially because their flight tendencies are fast and erratic.     Like many birds, avocets routinely perform single wing and leg stretches.  These stretches occur when the bird is at rest and at ease.  They stretch like this in the water…     and on land.  But this single-wing/leg stretch is not an indicator of nervousness or a precursor of take-off.   Neither of the birds in these two images did so immediately after the stretch.      1/1000, f/8, ISO 500, 500 f/4, 1.4 tc, natural light, a sliver of canvas added for composition  But when you see this two-winged wing stretch, expect imminent take-off.   A few seconds later this bird did just that but it took off away from me and I deleted the images.     Another two-wing stretch.  And almost immediately after the wings came down…     the bird took off.  It’s not a good shot because of the angle of take-off but it illustrates my point. Black-billed Magpies Constructing Their Nest

This post is largely about behavior.  The image quality ranges from good to mediocre but I think each photo contributes something to a better understanding of magpies. Black-billed Magpies begin nest-building as early as January and these particular birds have been at it for several weeks now.  Actually, in this case it’s more a “remodel” than it is “new construction” since this nest has been used for at least the last three years. All of these photos have been taken this week, which accounts for the relatively bright snow and ice background in some of the shots.   1/2500, f/7.1, ISO 500, 500 f/4, natural light One of the first things you may notice is the fact that sometimes these Black-billed Magpies don’t seem to have black bills.  Part of nest construction involves mud gathering and the drying mud on the bill can significantly alter the appearance of the bill.     1/2500, f/7.1, ISO 500, 500 f/4, natural light Both sexes contribute to nest construction and they’re quite industrious in their efforts.  The size of the twigs they bring in is often impressive.     1/4000, f/7.1, ISO 500, 500 f/4, natural light The nest is buried deep in a greasewood bush at about eye level for me.  Typically a bird bringing in construction material will land on a nearby perch and look over the nest for a few moments – seeming to plan placement of the twig and an approach path through the myriad of vertical greasewood stems that present significant obstacles to proper placement of such an unwieldy…

Displaying Yellow-headed Blackbird

Welcome to the month of March everyone – for me a psychological barrier between the depths of winter and the promise of spring.  It’s supposed to be almost 50 degrees today and that has me thinking of spring birds, warmer temperatures, liquid water and some actual greens in the landscape. By the Ides of March (only two weeks from now) male Yellow-headed Blackbirds will begin arriving in Utah and the females a week or two later.  Almost immediately the males will begin their raucous calling as they compete for territories and later for females.   This male was defending breeding territory in May.  Males display two primary types of song spreads – the Symmetrical Song Spread and the Asymmetrical Song Spread.  Each song spread is accompanied  by a distinct song type.  Here’s a link to one of them.     In this sequence of images the male is displaying the Symmetrical Sound Spread where the bird spreads its wings to expose the white patches and the tail is lowered and spread.  During this display he localizes with the song called the Accenting Song.     Once a display begins it almost seems like the bird loses voluntary control of its actions and the display must be completed before it regains control (my unscientific observation).     During part of this display the head is directed upward at 30-45 degrees.     This behavior is often difficult for the bird to complete without losing its balance on the typically spindly perches they prefer.  The whole thing is quite entertaining to watch.  …

Mucus-drinking Cowbird

Before Europeans came to North America and cleared forests which modified the environment into the agricultural and suburban landscapes of today, the range of the Brown-headed Cowbird was limited to the short-grass plains where they followed the almost endless herds of American Bison as they fed on the insects stirred up by those wandering behemoths.  Early settlers so strongly associated them with bison that they were called “Buffalo Birds”. Today that relationship still exists wherever limited numbers of bison can still be found.  Antelope Island is one of those places. One of the many challenges facing the cowbird was obtaining enough moisture as it followed the bison herds over the hot, rolling plains.  In late summer several years ago I photographed a cowbird behavior that illustrated one of the ways they solved that problem.   I found this huge bull languishing in the broiling sun next to a boulder that it had been using as a scratching post.  A group of Brown-headed Cowbirds were in the vicinity but at first I wasn’t paying much attention to them.   Then this female (at frame bottom) flew in close…     and began flying at the nostrils of the bull.  Initially I was unsure about what she was doing but she did it repeatedly and eventually it became clear that she was…     drinking the mucus-laden secretions from the bison’s nostrils.  She would actually hover in place as she gobbled down the long, stringy strands of mucus. Not a pretty sight and perhaps a bit unsettling to our human sensibilities but what an incredibly adaptive behavior…

A Shrike Partially Consumes Its Own Pellet

This post is documentary only.  The images are not aesthetically pleasing. Loggerhead Shrikes produce a pellet from an insect meal only 35.5 minutes (on average) after consumption.  This is an amazingly fast turn-around time (Short-eared Owls average 8.5 hours before a pellet is produced from their rodent prey).   When shrikes are consuming insects and spiders their pellets consist of the indigestible chitinous exoskeletons of those arthropods. I’ve seen and photographed Loggerhead Shrikes ejecting pellets many times but what I photographed on this August morning was new to me.   Because of the cluttered setting I was mostly only watching this juvenile through my lens (not photographing it) when I could tell it was about to chuck up a pellet. Every time I’ve observed this behavior in the past the pellet was ejected quickly and cleanly and simply fell to the ground.  But this bird had a surprise for me.  It caught the pellet in the tip of its beak…     and manipulated it there for some time.     Then it very deliberately mashed up the pellet and appeared to be swallowing parts of it as other smaller pieces fell to the ground.     My guess would be that about half of the pellet was consumed as the other half fell away, though I can’t be absolutely certain that any of it was actually eaten because my view of what was happening was not always a clear one. I wish I knew what was really going on here.  This is the only time I’ve ever seen a bird (of any species) manipulate a pellet after…

Attack Of The Shoveler

Most Northern Shovelers breed far north of my area (northern Utah) so I rarely get to see their intensely agonistic breeding behaviors but I’ve seen and photographed some of it in mid-June at Red Rock Lakes National Wildlife Refuge in sw Montana. Northern Shovelers are the most territorial of all dabbling ducks and the sexes remain paired longer than any other species.  Both of these factors contribute to their aggressive natures. These three sequential shots don’t have great image quality but I do think they illustrate some interesting behavior.    1/2000, f/7.1, ISO 500, 500 f/4, 1.4 tc I’d been photographing Short-eared Owls from my pickup but was aware of some activity from shovelers in the marshy grasses nearby.  A commotion got my attention just in time to see the male on the right fly in to attack another male on the water.  The second bird saw the attack coming and decided that discretion was the better part of valor and rose from the water in a hasty retreat.  I like the non-plussed look of the retreating bird.       1/2000, f/7.1, ISO 500, 500 f/4, 1.4 tc  In this second image of the series it’s not clear if the open bill of the incoming bird is due to aggressive vocalization or an attempt to bite the other male.      1/2000, f/7.1, ISO 500, 500 f/4, 1.4 tc But in this last image I think it becomes obvious that the  intent was to bite the retreating duck. Terns – After The Dive

Terns tend to be graceful and highly maneuverable flyers and those skills are very much on display when they’re fishing.    1/5000, f/6.3, ISO 500, 500 f/4, 1.4 tc, natural light I found this Forster’s Tern fishing at Bear River MBR last June and decided I’d attempt to photograph it coming out of the water after a dive – easier said than done.  And to catch it with a fish would be a bonus.  This species is known for feeding on “small” fish but this one is ridiculous – hardly worth the bother.  If you look very carefully you can see the miniscule fish behind the upper part of the bill.   I’ve cropped this shot unconventionally in order to include the “splash” behind the bird. These birds fish relentlessly.  Their quarry is small, as is their success rate.  In one Forster’s Tern study, 1538 dives produced 369 fish for a success rate of 24%.      1/5000, f/6.3, ISO 500, 500 f/4, 1.4 tc, natural light The fish is more easily seen in this next shot.  When they come off the surface they usually shake excess water out of their feathers in mid-air.  I caught this tern just before the shake, where it has twisted its wings in order to get good action for the upcoming shake.  I missed the shake with this bird but…      1/1250, f/6.3, ISO 500, 500 f/4, 1.4 tc, natural light I did manage to capture it on another day with this Caspian Tern.  I didn’t have enough shutter speed to get the quick movements particularly sharp but…

Juvenile Burrowing Owl Parallaxing

Parallax is the effect where the position or direction of an object appears to differ when viewed from different positions.  When an observer moves, the apparent relative motion of several stationary objects against a background gives hints about their relative distance which the brain can interpret to provide absolute depth information. As you can imagine this can be very helpful to birds for flight and for judging prey position.  The movement required comes automatically during flight but it can also be provided while perched by exaggerated movements of the head in all three dimensions.  Tipping the head also provides cues by changing the relative position of the eyes to the object being viewed. Learning to interpret this information takes practice so many juvenile birds do just that, owls in particular. Techs for the following images – most were taken at 1/640 or 1/800, f/9, ISO 400, 500 f/4, 1.4 tc, natural light, not baited, set up or called in.  All images presented in the order they were taken.    Several years ago I spent a lot of time over several weeks photographing a family of Burrowing Owls along the causeway to Antelope Island.  Their burrow was very close to the road and they became almost completely acclimated to traffic so I was able to observe and photograph many interesting behaviors of both juveniles and adults from my pickup. Western Grebe Fish Delivery

Temperatures are finally warming a bit here in northern Utah but the world is outside is still monotonously white.   Yesterday morning I measured 22 1/2″ of snow on the north end of Antelope Island, indicating that our bleak and largely featureless landscape will remain the same for the foreseeable future. So this morning I needed a break and decided to post an image (taken this past June at Bear River MBR) that would remind me that spring is somewhere out there on the distant horizon.    1/3200, f/7.1, ISO 640, 500 f/4, 1.4 tc, natural light Western Grebes are devoted parents to their incessantly hungry and noisy chicks.  The male and female take turns with their parental duties – one will back brood the youngsters while the other delivers fish and then they alternate responsibilities.  Here the female (smaller than the male, with a shorter, thinner bill – thus sexual dimorphism) has caught a small fish and is delivering it to the male.  Usually the parent receiving the fish will give it to the chick, as happened here. As I’m sure is obvious, I’m very much looking forward to watching and photographing springtime bird activities once again.  It’s going to be a very long 2-3 months… Ron

Loggerhead Shrike Attempting To Impale A Grasshopper

Shrikes are well-known for impaling their prey on sharp projections like thorns or barbed wire as a means of food storage – they’re called “butcher birds” for good reason.  I suspect the behavior to do so is innate but to become skilled at it takes practice. This past summer I found this Loggerhead Shrike on a fence on the Montana farm where I grew up.  It had already captured the grasshopper when I arrived on the scene. First, my standard disclaimer for behavioral sequences.  This bird was strongly sidelit so I seldom got a catch light and the light was harsh.  To compensate, I did more processing with these images than I normally do because my intent is to show the behavior as well as possible, even though image quality suffered from the processing.   Almost immediately I could see that the shrike was going to attempt to impale the grasshopper on the barb just below and in front of the beak of the bird.     Impaling prey apparently isn’t an easy task.     From all the contortions the bird went through…     I’d assume that part of the problem was the awkward angle the shrike was at…     to get proper leverage to complete the task.     At one point the bird nearly fell off the fence.     After a few moments the shrike gave up, turned its back on me with the grasshopper between its legs (and a gob of grasshopper on its bill) and seemed to contemplate what…

A Pied-billed Grebe Attempts To Dismember A Frog

Pied-billed Grebes are opportunistic feeders, taking large crustaceans (especially crayfish), fish, insects and other invertebrates.  They also consume a lot of frogs when they’re available.  When the prey is too large to swallow whole (frogs and crayfish especially) they grasp the appendages with their beak and shake it vigorously until the limbs break off.  I’ve also seen adults tear off bits of the body trunk of frogs to feed to their chicks.   This bird is a juvenile, still learning the finer points of consuming prey.  This stage of plumage development is referred to as the “stripe-head stage”, for obvious reasons.  Adults lose those stripes.  The frog it has captured is probably one of the first amphibians the bird has had to deal with without assistance from a parent and that inexperience seemed obvious as the young bird dealt with the frog. I’ve presented all the photos in this series in the order they were taken.     As you can see, the young frog hasn’t yet fully metamorphosed into an adult and retains the tadpole tail.     The grebe would repeatedly grasp a limb (it tried all 5 of them several times)…     and then shake the frog violently in an apparent attempt to tear the appendage off like it has seen its parents do so many times before.     Here it’s working on the left front leg.     Other times the bird would grasp the body and shake.  Hard!     At times the grebe would appear to rest and “think” about its…

Brood Patch In A Female Short-eared Owl

One of the primary functions of feathers is insulation and they’re very good at preventing heat loss.  But this efficiency presents a problem – how to keep the egg(s) sufficiently warm during incubation, since feathers act as a barrier to heat transfer from parent to eggs.  Typical bird body temperature is about 104 degrees F. and the ideal incubation temperature for their eggs is very close to normal human body temperature – 98.6 degrees F. That dilemma has been solved by most bird species through the evolution of the “brood patch” – an area of belly skin that loses its feathers near the end of the egg-laying period.  As the feathers are lost, supplementary blood vessels engorge the skin of the “patch” so that hot blood is brought to the surface.  Amazingly, the parent can even shut down blood flow to this region when that bird is off the nest.  When the incubating parent returns to the eggs for incubation, he/she typically goes through settling movements that bring the brood patch into gentle contact with the eggs. The patch may be large or small, depending on a variety of factors including how many eggs are incubated.  Some species have a single patch in the middle of the belly, others may have one each side or even three.   Typically the patch is difficult to observe in wild birds, particularly in flight but I have several images of a female Short-eared Owl where it is visible.  This female had two chicks that she was trying to keep warm during a typically cold Montana spring.   The male…

Mean-fighting Coots

American Coots are, without question, the most aquatic, common and widely distributed rail species in North America.  Clumsy and awkward fliers, they require long running take-offs to become airborne but they are skilled swimmers – largely due to their lobately webbed toes. And oh, are they ever ornery! But first, allow me to make a few excuses…  These images of fighting coots were taken several years ago when I was relatively new to photography.  My settings weren’t particularly appropriate so I’m not including them here.   And most of these photos were shot in JPEG rather than RAW, so my processing options were extremely limited when I tried to adjust exposure, so the frustratingly white bill is pretty bright in a few of these images.   This is one of the aggressive postures used by males to challenge other males.  Whenever I see this I know that all hell is about to break loose and I’d better be ready.     In my experience, coots have two primary fighting strategies.  One is for each bird to lie on their backs in the water while propped up by their wings and tails and strike out at each other with their feet and claws.  In this fighting position, their defense is to try to grasp the opposing birds feet.  Here we get a good look at those unusual lobed toes.  If they become locked together they then fight with their bills.     The second fighting strategy uses bills and wings as weapons.  If one bird gains the advantage it often tries to force its opponent underwater.     The losing bird…
