Even though this may not be a “pretty” shot it’s photos like this that stir my soul because all of its elements are natural and the prey gives us a glimpse of the rawness of nature (and apologies for the premature email for this post last night).
There’s more negative fallout caused by baiting raptors than many are aware of and some of it affects our fellow photographers who don’t bait and never have. I’ve been stewing about this for a while now so I finally had to get it off my chest.
Different woodpecker species often compete for the same nesting cavity and “ownership” can change from year to year.
Kestrels are highly efficient and skillful at “de-hiding” their small mammal prey (and no, I don’t think this image is gory).
Or perhaps it was a threat posture. Or a combination of both. Either way I thought it was a little bizarre.
And speculation about the reason for an apparent recent decline in the Antelope Island coyote population.

The seeds were still on the wild plants and they weren’t easy to reach which resulted in some fun photos.
After so many kingfisher posts recently it was my intention to post a different species today. However, events of yesterday warranted otherwise. Those events include “my” male Belted Kingfisher being cooperative again, several fascinating kingfisher behaviors and an unexpected and potentially very unpleasant encounter with a local cop..
I don’t know if this bird was clumsy because it was a juvenile, clumsy by nature or this was an isolated event.
