I made another rookie mistake, this time with my Thanksgiving turkey.
Happy Thanksgiving to all Feathered Photography-ites out there, wherever you may be. I hope everyone has a memorable, safe day and holiday weekend with family and friends, including but not limited to a delectable and bounteous Thanksgiving dinner.
As for me, due to a rookie mistake I made with my turkey, I’ll probably be having something like pizza for my Thanksgiving repast. I bought a moderately sized frozen turkey breast about nine days before Thanksgiving and within just over 2 days in my 39Β° fridge it was already completely thawed out.
I didn’t dare wait until Thanksgiving to cook it so I’ve already been eating turkey for two days.
When it comes to poultry safety, I don’t mess around.
Ron
Note: In case you’re wondering why the Wild Turkey’s snood in my photo is sticking straight up into the air, it’s because the tom shook his head just before I took the photo. Silly bird.
Iβm late, Iβm late β but perhaps in time to wish you a Happy Thanksgiving Pizza Party! Thankful for your significant contribution to the grace, sanity and beauty that still exists in the world, and for reminding me that turkeys have snoods! π¦β€οΈ
You Chris, can be late any ol’ time. Thank you.
Happy Thanksgiving, Ron! I’m so thankful for you and this wonderful community you’ve created here on FP! π What a gorgeous specimen of a turkey.
You know what they say about the “early bird.” π Glad it was tasty and that you have plenty for sandwiches (the best part!).
Thanks very much, Marty. I’m sure glad this early bird gets turkey instead of a worm. Agree about the “best part”.
We just had our first post-T-meal sandwich (we ate at 1:30, so by 7:30, we were a bit peckish) — soooo good! π
Happy Thanksgiving, Ron. I hope you are out for your traditional Thanksgiving photos. I kept my turkey in the cooler on ice until last night when I put it in the fridge to totally defrost. We are celebrating Sunday. My mom is sick and we are hoping dad doesn’t catch it so we can safely get together by Sunday. We are having pot roast today, I will run some out to my parents later. Nice snood in your photo!
Thanks, April. I almost went shooting this morning but didn’t. My back is giving me fits again so I didn’t want to drive that far.
Yet again your post didn’t show up in my reader and I didn’t get an email.
Thank you for your sterling posts year in and year out.
And a very Happy Thanksgiving to you and all your readers.
EC, after the holiday weekend I’ll try again to figure out what’s going on.
Happy Thanksgiving to you and all your FP community. Thank your for the gorgeous Tom photo! An amazing creature!
Glad you like the photo, Carolyn. Thanks.
:Happy Thanksgiving to you. We celebrated last weekend with friends, today is leftover stir fry.
Thanks, Jo.
Happy Thanksgiving Ron and all others that come here! π
“Shit happens”…. π Doing a small rib roast this year as turkey is too much for 2 of us when one likes dark meat and one is partial to white meat…….. π
I don’t do the frig thawing thing but rather a bucket of VERY cold water – never enough room in the frig anyway!
Luv the gobbler picture. Recently saw a small flock down near Belt so they’re still “around”.
6 degrees and about 4″ of “fluffy” new snow – wind will have a ball with that!
Good luck with your snow and wind, Judy. Not necessarily in that order… π
Happy Thanksgiving, Ron! Thank you for the many years of sharing your stunning photos and superb commentary. What a service you have provided, especially in such troubled times.
Thank you, Nanci.
Happy Thanksgiving Ron! There is always a mistake at Thanksgiving – part of the fun! I am rebaking a black forrest cake as we speak! Not used to my brother-in-laws oven and my cake fell! Wonβt happen a second time!
Good luck with the second cake, Kathleen!
Well, pizza sounds good if it’s home made! But I’m surprised you’re not going for your old great standard: turkey divan!! I still have your recipe and use it quite often (although now that I know better I don’t use canned soup).
Happy Thanksgiving!! Yes, there are things to be thankful for. . .we just have to focus on those.
The crust will be homemade but this time I might use bottled sauce.
Not to worry, there will be turkey divan in my near future. When I cook a turkey there always is.
Thanks Ron and back at you. Never knew what that turkey part was. Just read an Audubon article yesterday about how to defend yourself if attacked by a turkey. Good info. We have wild turkeys here, but I have never seen one.
Thanks, Everett. Just read an article this morning that said that the populations of our Utah turkeys are healthy and increasing. Based on what I’ve been seeing in the field, I believe it.

Happy Thanksgiving Ron. I am grateful for all of your wonderful photos and posts.
Thank you, Mark.
Happy Thanksgiving, Ron and my fellow FP followers. I had to giggle at the early defrost of your Thanksgiving turkey! Nothing wrong with eating turkey a few days early. I see a yummy turkey sandwich for your Thanksgiving meal or turkey chili in your future!! If you watch football and parades on Thanksgiving then that sandwich is easy and convenient. Have a safe, warm and easy T-day!!
Melanie, I’ll have another turkey sandwich for lunch today but the more I think about it, pizza for dinner has the most appeal. I don’t do turkey chili.
Then Pizza is the winner. Satisfying that yen will hit the spot I am sure. Enjoy your day!
An appropriate photo, and a fine specimen at that.
Happy Thanksgiving professor.
Thanks, Michael.
Happy thanksgiving, Ron. It appears you are enjoying a special thanksgiving experience, spread over days. I reckon thatβs a blessing π
“It appears you are enjoying a special thanksgiving experience, spread over days.”
You’re right about that. I enjoy turkey sandwiches at least as much as the entire turkey spread.
The best-laid plans, and all that. On the other hand, that photo of the turkey is perfect. I didn’t expect an out-loud laugh this morning, but there it was. I hope your day’s a good one. There are a lot of us out here who are thankful for your photography — and your perseverance over the years! Happy Thanksgiving!
Much appreciated, Shoreacres. In the end, my plans weren’t so “best-laid”.
