Grandpa Had Company Yesterday

A personal post.

The reason I haven’t been out shooting for the last few days? I’ve been preparing for company.

Yesterday I had a long-overdue visitor – my grandson Ryan (Shannon’s son). Ryan lives in Florida and it’s been about five years since I’ve seen him so we had a lot of catching up to do. His visit was shorter than I expected, and hoped for, but the time we had together will be cherished.

Ryan will turn 30 this week. I’m having a hard time wrapping my head around having a 30-year-old grandson. How can I possibly be that old?

He asked for a tour of my garden in the mid-day heat so of course he picked a few tomatoes. And yes, we had BLT’s for lunch.

Happy trails, Ryan. After your first flight cancellation, I hope you made all the rest of your flight connections – despite Hurricane Debby.

  1. Albeit too short I am so glad (for both of you) that you had this visit. And yes, I have great nephews and nieces who make me wonder where time went.

  2. How special for you and Ryan! The storm in my part of Florida (Sarasota, but inland) was not fun. Hopefully he was able to get home without problems.

  3. How wonderful for you both. He is a very handsome man. Sorry he did not stay longer and could visit some of the cooler mt tails. Jon is about the same age as you 79 tomorrow! His children are 33 and 28. He started later than most. I don’t think he will have grandchildren, which he is unhappy about. Our children don’t seem to want to have children. But then Jon was late to start a family so who knows. I think it is better to be a younger parent and grandparent than he and I.

  4. Can’t believe Shannon has a 30 year old son!!! That is a head scratcher for sure!!! He is handsome! Family time <3 (for the most part)!

  5. Woo Hoo! So glad you had some time together, albeit all too short. πŸ’œπŸ’œπŸ’œ Ryan’s quite the handsome lad and he love’s BLTs — a chip off the old block. I see so much of you and Shannon in him. And how do they keep getting older while we stay the same age? πŸ˜‰ (One of my great-nephews will be 30 this year. How does that happen when I’m still “29?”😈)

That’s wonderful Ron. You should have had him hold a tomato in one hand and a bird in the other so it would be a legitimate Feathered photo. I can see a family resemblance there. My oldest is only 24.
Glad he got to spend some time with you.

    • Thanks, Everett. That almost could have happened. While we were in the garden there were several birds at the feeder about 2′ from us. Literally within arm’s reach.

  7. Wonderful to have the visit even if short! πŸ™‚ Good looking lad he is.
Time DOES have a way of getting away from us! πŸ˜‰ Hope Ryan isn’t in the path of the hurricane!

  8. He looks great!! Glad you had a visit with him. My niece and nephew will be 30 in December and I long for the days when they wanted to spend ALL of their time with me. Now I’m lucky to get them to meet me for dinner when I’m in NY!

And yes, Ronnie, we are THAT OLD!!!

    • “And yes, Ronnie, we are THAT OLD!!!”

It’s a harsh reality, isn’t it Sue. I wish I was as young physically as I think I am in most every other way.

  9. Sweet! Ryan looks like you – his eyes, the planes of his cheeks and his smile. He will be blessed if he also has inherited your intellect. I will bet you’ll often reflect on Ryan’s visit with a twinkle in your eyes, an extra thump in your heart, and that same smile, Grandpa.
    I love your blog.

What a handsome lad. Wonderful portrait of a young man and a garden all in their prime, and a fitting tableau for an accomplished granddad. All topped off by garden-ripened tomatoes & BLTs. Life is good.

  11. What a TREAT for both you and Ryan; and with garden tomatoes thrown into the bargain ! Here’s hoping that you and your BLT’s
will tempt him to return soon again.
