I’m often amused when I get unexpected, oddball images.

Yesterday morning at Farmington Bay WMA I was intrigued by the possibilities when a Killdeer approached this tiny ‘island’ so I fired away, not knowing what I’d get. Because of the quirky reflection that includes only ‘his’ head and a small portion of his upper back, this turned out to be my favorite shot in the burst.
I’m not sure how the island was able to block the reflection of all of the rest of the bird, including his tail, but I think that contributes to the oddball appeal of the image.

Even the killdeer seemed to be intrigued by what was going on with his reflection, as he appeared to be watching what happened to it as it slowly became more complete as he walked toward the end of the island.
Yes, I was amused. On slow mornings like yesterday, it doesn’t take much.
Ron
PS – I almost went to Antelope Island yesterday instead of Farmington Bay. I’m glad I didn’t.
Wonderful shots Ron, thanks for sharing!
What delightful photos. Sweet bird.
I am glad you were not at Antelope Island.
What a crazy and sad world/time we are living in.
Take Care,
Kaye
Thanks, Kaye.
Interesting post. I love bird reflection photos and take many including these guys and gals. When I am at our lakes I often see something fairly close by and say, “Oh, it’s just a Killdeer.” I did a list of 10 most ignored birds – by me – and posted on our Bird and Nature group on Prescott Nextdoor, but did not include the Killdeer. They really are cute.
“They really are cute.”
I agree, Everett. They’re loaded with personality too.
Those are great shots. Quirky and fun. I am very glad that fate led you away from Antelope Island.
Thanks on both counts, EC.
Very cute photos. From other comments sounds like a shooting took place. Sorry to hear about that and a shame if someone lost his life. I guess life is a gamble every day for us.
Trudy, the info is in the link I provided in the “PS” of my post.
Killdeer are adorable when they are just standing by the side of the road, so this one earns a “super adorable” along with its reflection!
You’ve described some encounters before that could easily have turned into the Antelope Island incident – scary! Glad you were not in the vicinity.
Carolyn, I’ve seen (and documented with photos) some pretty crazy stuff on the island before, but nothing anywhere near as crazy as this.
It has been slow except for the killdeer at Farmington Bay. The reflections are wonderful in those shallow pools.
I was watching the news as I prepared dinner before I left for the night to work and saw about the road rage. I wondered if my parents would call about the incident and yes they did right at the commercial during the news. Antelope Island isn’t as wild anymore but maybe it’s wild in unwanted ways.
April, I’m afraid you’re right about it becoming too wild in the wrong way.
I am a sucker for a killdeer and your photos of this one are delightful! Thank goodness you did not go to Antelope Island! There are more than a few gun-happy, angry people in this sad world. I hope you never encounter one of them. I prefer your form of shooting.
“I prefer your form of shooting.”
I prefer it too, Melanie. Big time.
Great shots and worth a chuckle!
Good. Thanks, Kathryn.
Photo #1 is quirky, for sure, but I think photo #2 is a real keeper—
almost every day brings confirmation to me that to label a badly-
behaved human being a “real animal” is SUCH AN INSULT to
to the winged, finned, and 4-legged of the world……
Thanks, Kris. I like that second one too.
Fun! 🙂 Guess the island wasn’t “reflective”….. 😉 The Killdeer checking out his own reflection is a giggle – must not have found it threatening or he would have been out of there! Nowhere is really safe these days…….. 🙁
I too am glad you weren’t at Antelope Island. Sure don’t need to get caught up in something like that or be detained while they were messing with it! GEEZ!
Judy, last I read, the causeway was likely to be closed both ways until sometime this morning. That would make some folks who wanted (needed) to get off the island very unhappy.
I’m really glad you weren’t on Antelope Island yesterday too! When I saw that report I had a “moment” but then I read it and saw that the person who was shot was a man in his 50s so I knew it wasn’t you!!! 😉
I’m glad too, Susan. If I had been, I might still be there…
Beautiful.
Thanks, Michael.
