Pronghorn Doe Portrait

Check out her thick eyelashes and unusually long eyebrow hairs.

When I photograph pronghorn I usually concentrate on the bucks, which doesn’t seem quite fair. Or right. So today I’m featuring a doe and I think she’s a real beauty.

I found her all by herself four days ago on Antelope Island. Because of the time of year and the fact that she was alone, I have to wonder if she didn’t have a fawn or two hidden nearby. Here she’s giving me the once-over before trotting away.

I think she’s a real looker with those huge doe eyes, facial markings and perky, forward-facing ears. And I swear I can see just a hint of a smile.

Until I looked at this photo more carefully I had no idea that…

pronghorn have such incredibly long eyebrow hairs. One of these appears to be nearly 3″ long. And her thick, downward-pointing eyelashes are pretty impressive too.

When we pay attention there’s always something new waiting to be revealed by the camera, even with the commonplace.

  1. Beautiful photo, and animal. I like her slender face and muzzle. She has a Mona Lisa smile.

  2. She is the loveliest of ladies. Such a beauty. I’m so glad you gave her a spotlight here. She looks in fine fettle, so I’m hoping she has some equally robust fawns. ❤️

    • I’m thinking she probably has them already, Marty. I looked but couldn’t find any nearby, which doesn’t surprise me because they’re usually so incredibly well hidden when they’re very young.

  3. Her face is much more refined and delicate than the clumsy boy from the other day. No cheek scent patches for the females, I guess? She’s lovely.

    • Carolyn, pronghorn bucks have nine scent glands and does have six. I don’t know where they all are.

    • With eyes and a smile like that no wonder she has babies. Wonder if, keeping your attention on her instead of looking for her babies, she isn’t thinking, another male successfully snared and disarmed? 😉😁

      • Loved your first sentence, Granny Pat. It made me laugh when I didn’t feel like laughing. I spent most of the day partially cutting down one of my Catulpa trees and my body’s feeling it, so it’s been a while since I’ve even smiled. I’ll finish cutting it down when I’ve recovered.

  4. PS Her beautiful ears are so similar to a horse❣️

  5. Such a lovely creature you captured on film Ron❣️ I’m only familiar with the Mule deer prevalent in our Santa Cruz mountains/(Calif.) So what an absolute treat to see your beautiful post of the pronghorn female❣️

  6. Love the close up! Curious about the bump above her right eye. Any clues?

    What a gorgeous creature!

  8. Commonplace? Queue hysterical laughter.
    And she is absolutely gorgeous.

  9. Them’s some movie star good looks. Better, actually, as furry creatures always look well-groomed. They never wake up with bed hair or need a hair cut (some domesticated animals excepted).
Interesting that the eyelashes are visible only in profile. Not apparent on the left eye.

Beautiful lady and photograph. On 6-1 we are going to see a film presentation here called “Born To Run” about our north central Arizona Pronghorns. We have hundreds here although Game and Fish have taken away large numbers over the past few years and moved them to other areas in the state as our population continues to grow with the invasion of the unhappy Californians.
There are areas here where we used to hike right through a large Pronghorn herd that is now just a huge area of newly developed neighborhoods.
We cannot complain because 18 years ago we were Californians moving here and where our community is located Pronghorns freely roamed.

  11. Even before reading your comment to that effect, I thought, ” and she
even has a gentle SMILE to go with her thick eyelashes, big dark eyes, and altogether beautiful face…..” she definitely beats Leonardo Da Vinci’s “Mona
Lisa ” for sheer feminine charm– in MY book, anyway !

    Nice!

FYI – On occasion they can be spotted in California on the Carrizo Plain. Always a treat to see.

  13. Beautiful! Nice to see a close up and that she held still for long enough to get the shots. 🙂 Nub of a horn also visible….. Probably does have a fawn or 2 around.

We have 2 VERY pregnant whitetail does across the creek at present – it’s about that time.
